The Village of Glen Ellyn’s Fourth of July celebrations were significantly disrupted after authorities launched a death investigation at Lake Ellyn Park, leading to the cancellation of the annual Freedom Four Run and later the community’s fireworks display.
According to village officials and the Glen Ellyn Police Department, officers responded to Lake Ellyn Park early Friday after a body was discovered in the area. Police immediately secured the scene and began an investigation, closing portions of the park while detectives and other emergency personnel conducted their work.
As a result of the active investigation, organizers canceled the Freedom Four Run, a longstanding Independence Day tradition that typically attracts hundreds of participants each year. Village officials stated that public safety remained their highest priority and emphasized that there was no active threat to the community.

Organizers said the decision was made out of an abundance of caution for residents, staff, volunteers, and event participants.
The combined cancellations marked an unusual Independence Day for the Glen Ellyn community, where the annual holiday celebrations have long been a popular tradition.
