Paul Pelosi, the 86-year-old husband of former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, is under investigation following a traffic incident in Napa County, California, where authorities allege he struck a legally parked vehicle before leaving the scene. The incident has been referred to prosecutors for review as officials consider a possible misdemeanor hit-and-run charge.
According to the Napa County Sheriff’s Office, the collision occurred on July 3 in the Yountville area. Investigators allege that Pelosi’s vehicle collided with an unoccupied, legally parked car. Deputies say Pelosi briefly stopped following the impact but then drove away before law enforcement arrived.
A witness who observed the incident contacted emergency services, allowing deputies to locate Pelosi a short distance from the crash scene. Authorities reported that damage was visible to the front of Pelosi’s vehicle, while the parked vehicle also sustained damage. No injuries were reported, as the parked vehicle was unoccupied at the time of the collision.
Following the investigation, deputies did not arrest Pelosi at the scene. Law enforcement officials stated that alcohol was not considered a factor in the incident. According to the sheriff’s office, Pelosi voluntarily submitted to a preliminary alcohol screening test, which reportedly showed a 0.00 blood alcohol concentration. Investigators also indicated there was no evidence suggesting impairment by drugs.
The case has now been forwarded to the Napa County District Attorney’s Office, which will determine whether misdemeanor hit-and-run charges should be formally filed. Prosecutors are expected to review the investigative findings before making a charging decision.
Because of Pelosi’s age, the sheriff’s office also submitted a confidential referral to the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) requesting a driver re-evaluation. Officials noted that such referrals are standard procedure in certain circumstances involving older motorists and do not necessarily indicate wrongdoing or result in automatic license suspension.
The latest traffic incident comes more than two years after Pelosi resolved a separate driving-related case stemming from a May 2022 collision in Napa County. In that case, he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor driving under the influence charges after a crash that injured another driver. He was sentenced to probation, ordered to complete a DUI education program, pay fines and restitution, install an ignition interlock device, and serve a reduced jail sentence under California law.
The recent incident has once again drawn public attention because of Pelosi’s previous legal history. However, officials emphasize that the current matter is separate from the 2022 case and remains under review. No formal criminal charges have been filed regarding the July 3 collision as of this publication.
Authorities continue to encourage anyone with additional information related to the incident to cooperate with investigators. Further updates are expected once the Napa County District Attorney completes its review and determines whether charges will proceed. Until then, the investigation remains active, and officials have declined to comment further on the pending case.
